Motherlode – inaccessible, impenetrable, never lets you fully discover what it’s hiding...

The works of Monika Rubaniuk, created as part of the "Motherlode" project, bring to my mind images from the film by the outstanding Spanish director Guillermo del Toro "Pan’s Labyrinth".

"Wonderfully disturbing and deeply emotional, it made me think of the best fairytales, where each chapter is a gem and the whole thing changes the way the viewer perceives the world around them," wrote Roshani Chokshi, an American writer whose books transport audiences to fantastic worlds inspired by mythology and folklore.

The glass shrubs, perennials, overgrowths and bushes by Monika Rubaniuk take us to such a world – the Labyrinth. They attract our attention and at the same time arouse anxiety – do we accidentally cut ourselves on the sharp edges, do we damage the fragile structure? Made of pieces of glass and mirrors they shine, sparkle, spark, reflect and refract light. They are simultaneously real and unreal.

It takes a lot of imagination, talent and, above all, great diligence to build such an unobvious world out of pieces of glass.

A futuristic motherlode – autonomous, free from human interference.
